15 3/8" English viola by George Craske, c.1840

15 3/8" English viola by George Craske, c.1840

George Craske began violin-making at a young age, studying with William Forster Jnr in London before progressing to making instruments for Thomas Dodd and for the firm of Muzio Clementi. Craske later relocated to Bath, before opening his own shop in Birmingham. An astoundingly prolific maker, he is thought to have made over 2500 instruments over the course of his life, including 2050 violins, 300 violas, 250 cellos and 20 double basses. This handsome viola possesses a warm and characterful tone and is in excellent condition. It is finished with golden-brown varnish and a beautiful one-piece back.
