16 3/8" English viola by Hoing, 1965

Clifford Hoing was a fine maker of violin and violas, based in High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire. Hoing trained as a wood carver, working with the renowned sculptor, Eric Gill, before taking up violin making in 1935. He went on to specialise in violas, and was awarded the Diploma of Honour for one of his instruments at an exhibition in The Hague in 1949. With a striking one-piece back, this viola possesses a direct and powerful sound and is finished with red-brown oil varnish.
