15" English viola, labelled 'W Gilkes', London 1829

Son and pupil of the celebrated luthier Samuel Gilkes, William Gilkes was a prolific maker of instruments in 19th century London. This viola, made in 1829, features a rich, clear tone, and is warm and responsive across all registers. It is in good, restored condition and is finished with rich, red-brown varnish.
