Stringers of Edinburgh
Maureen Stringer: Director

Maureen Stringer Maureen studied Cello at the Royal College of Music, London, and the Chigiana in Sienna.


She subsequently became a member of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Scottish Baroque Ensemble.


After 20 years of professional playing and teaching, she founded Stringers in 1992.

Sally Morrison: Manager

Sally Morrison Sally studied viola at the Royal Northern College of Music.

She subsequently worked for two years as a professional violist in London and Edinburgh.

Sally joined Stringers in 2009, as Manager and Head of the violin and viola department.

Virginia Swinney: Manager

Virginia Swinney Virginia studied Music and English at Glasgow University, with violin as her first instrument.

She joined Stringers in 1997 as a trainee, and was appointed Manager of the Edinburgh shop in 2001. 

Kate Finlay: Assistant Manager

kate editKate studied Music Technology at Edinburgh University, and was a Saturday assistant at Stringers throughout her student years. 


She joined Stringers full-time in 2009, and took up the position of Assistant Manager in March 2010.



Renee Kenny: Cello Department Manager

Renee Kenny Renee studied cello at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music, and the Hochschule, Vienna.

She played professionally for some time before becoming a much valued cello teacher.

Renee joined Stringers in 2008 as the Cello Department Manager.

Julia Hoare: Education Department Manager

julia resizeJulia studied for a Music Degree at Newcastle University before completing a Masters in Historical Musicology at King's College London.


She worked part-time at Stringers in London during her studies, and become a full-time member of the Edinburgh staff in 2010.




Judith Blackwell: Senior Restorer

img 3189-hudithAfter training in Leeds and London, Judith became Workshop Manager at J.P Guivier in central London, where she worked on many fine instruments.


Her extensive knowledge and experience in repair and restoration is combined with a particular interest in set-up and tonal adjustment to ensure that each instrument reaches its full potential.


We are delighted to welcome Judith to Stringers as a Senior Restorer.



Russel Redpath: Luthier

Russel Redpath Russel is a former student of Robin McHugh.

Apart from his work as Luthier in our Educational Department, Russel also plays violin and guitar.

Stuart Reid: Luthier

picture2 stuStuart studied at Glasgow Anniesland College and the Newark School of Violin Making, where he graduated with Distinction.


He received four awards from the RAB Trust, before joining Stringers as a full-time member of staff in 2015.


Stuart enjoys making violins, violas and cellos alongside his restoration work at Stringers.


Philip Thurloe: Bow Specialist

Philip Thurloe Philip is an expert in valuing fine bows.

He worked for many years at Ealing Strings in London before moving north in 1987.
