Viola by Lorenzo Maffei, Lucca, 1786

Lorenzo Maffei was a distinguished Italian maker working in Lucca, Italy from 1765 to 1786. He produced instruments in which Gabrielli’s style of outline and arching is clear. This viola is a superb example of Maffei’s work, with an impressive range considering its smaller size. The lower register is deep and powerful, contrasting brilliantly with the lyrical quality of the upper. It is in good condition and finished with a warm golden brown varnish.
